Vasectomy Surgery
Relevant information about Vasectomy Surgery.
The surgery consists on a procedure where the vasa deferentia of a man are severed and then tied. The aim of this surgical intervention is to prevent the release of sperm that occurs when a man ejaculates. In a vasectomy the vas deferens of the patient will be clamped. This will prevent the sperm from mixing with the semen. As everybody knows, an egg cannot be fertilized when there are no sperm in the semen. What is fantastic is that the testicles continue producing sperm, but it is reabsorbed by the own body of the patient.
A vasectomy is used for men that want to have a permanent method of birth control. It is truly important for the couple to consider this method only if they are sure that they do not want to have children in the future. The method works very well; statistics have confirmed that almost the 99.99% of birth control is effective. There are only 1 or two women out of 1000 that will have an unexpected pregnancy during the first year after the vasectomy was performed. Pregnancy can occur after a vasectomy for a few reasons, some of them are: a failure produced in the period where it is expected to know if the sperm count is confirmed to be zero and spontaneous and unpredicted reconnection of the vas deferens, this happens in very rare cases.
During the surgery, the doctor will use local anesthesia that will numb the affected area, they also will use a specific medicine that will reduce the anxiety of the patient and will make him sleepy. Before the operation, the professionals will clean the testicles of the patient and it is probable that they will be shaved. The doctor will start by making two small incisions in the scrotum, through this aperture the two vas deferens will be cut. Once this has been done, the two vas deferens are tied; in some cases doctors use electrocautery in order to block the ends with heat. After this, the vas deferens is replaced inside the scrotum and the skin is closed using stitches that will be dissolved naturally. Another common technique is a vasectomy that is performed without scalpel. Using this method, the doctor will perform the operation by manipulating a small clamp with pointed ends. Instead of using the scalpel, the clamp is poked through the skin of the organ and then opened. Some of the benefits of this procedure are, less bleeding, a smaller incision and less scars and lower risk. This type of procedure is as effective as the common vasectomy.
After the surgery, the patient´s scrotum will be numb for at least two hours. It is recommended to apply cold packs in the affected area and lie on the back for the rest of the day. Doctors suggest wearing snug underwear and comfortable jogging to protect the operated part of the body. It is common that the patient may feel minor pain in the scrotum for several days; on the other hand, the patient will be able to resume work after two days from the operation, it will be essential to avoid making physical effort such as heavy lifting. Sexual intercourse will be resumed after a week from the operation; it is important to remark that in this period of time the patient can still get his partner pregnant because the sperm count is not zero. The patient will have to use an alternative birth control method, until the sperm count is zero (this occurs two months after the surgery). It is probable that the patient may feel a mild aching in the testicles during sexual intercourse.
Risks during this operation are very low; however as it is a surgery there are few possibilities of having certain complications. There can exist an infection in the area where the incision was made as well as it can appear in the scrotum. In some cases, sperm can leak from a vas deferens forming a small lump (that is named sperm granuloma), this is not a risky situation, the elimination of the lump can be performed by having special medication, and in some cases with surgery. There can be an inflammation of the tubes that move sperm from the testicles. In few cases, the vas deferens can grow back together (having a recanalization) and making the man fertile again. Finally, there can exist and adverse reaction to the anesthesia; this will be controlled by the anesthesiologist; he/she will determine which type of anesthesia will be more suitable for each patient, taking in account his clinical history and his health. It is important to remark that the patient will have to take care of himself after the surgery by following the rules that were given by the doctor. Among these rules, we can find, being careful with hygiene and cleanness, being strict with having medication and having regular visits to the doctor.
The surgery will avoid having to worry about having a child. The couple will be able to enjoy sexual intercourse in a different way, without thinking in alternative birth control methods. The majority of the patients that undergo this type of operation are pleased with the results, because they assure that they are able to feel much more relaxed and satisfied during sexual intercourse. Normal sexual abilities will not be affected by the surgical procedure.
Vasectomy has nothing to do with castration, which implies the complete removal of the testicles. The surgery will not affect the sexual development of the patient, erection, sex drive, orgasm and ability to ejaculate.
