Varicocelectectomy Surgery

Varicocelectectomy Surgery

Relevant information about Varicocelectectomy Surgery.

  • What does the surgery consist on

Varicocelectectmoy is a surgery that consists on the laparoscopic variocele ligation. According to statistics, this method is better than the classical methods for treating variocele that are open surgery and embolization.

  • Which problem does the surgery solve

Depending on the condition of the patient, the doctor will choose the best method for each patient. There are many options for the treatment of varioceles, depending on symptoms and seriousness of the condition of the patient. In some cases, if the variocele is not causing any symptom, doctors prefer not treating them. Varioceles can affect men of many ages; it can affect teenagers (from 12 to 18 years old), in this cases, young men present large variocele and a decrease of the normal testicular size. In these cases, doctors treat the variocele with surgery, because it may affect the fertility of the patient in the future. Variocele can appear in any person that feels testicular pain; in this type of cases, pain is described as “dragging” and worse with physical activity and standing.  The treatment is oriented to men that are subfertile or infertile, in this case the improvement in the correction of the variocele can be of 70%, but the problem of infertility will not be solved.

  • How is the surgery performed

The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will start by making three small incisions (of 5mm each) in the abdomen. The surgeon will place a urethral catheter in the bladder. The peritoneal area will be inflated with carbon dioxide; the aim of this is to enlarge the space that exists between the organs. The posterior peritoneum is excised with endoscopic scissors. The entire procedure will be viewed in a special monitor that will be located in the operating room. This less invasive method is gaining popularity over the pass of the years, because of the number of advantages that it brings. Laparoscopic varicocelectectomy is an alternative of surgical procedure that brings many benefits to the patient; doctors have confirmed that there is a better convalescence and less analgesic requirement after the operation has taken place. Other advantages that bring the laparoscopic approach of varioceles are: an easier identification of the veins that are affected; the technique allow the doctor to avoid injury in the artery and lymphatic vessels; varioceles located in both sides of the patient´s body can be corrected simultaneously; a faster recovery as the incisions are very small and have a quick heal.

  • Surgery length: The surgery is estimated to last 45 minutes approximately. The surgical procedure can be performed in an outpatient basis or in a common hospital. Before entering the operating room, the nurse will monitor if the normal functions of the patient are well; she will check blood pressure and the temperature of the body. After this routine process they will take the patient into the operating room, where he will have general anesthesia.

  • How is the post surgery process

After the procedure, the patient will be asked to have a pack of ice for a few hours on the affected area. As it is a less invasive surgery, the patient will not have problems of inflammation, but this pack of ice is used to prevent swelling. Generally, patients who undergo a laparoscopic varicocelectectomy do not present post surgery pain, the main reason of this is that the incisions are very small and present a quick heal. However, if the patient may feel any discomfort or pain that is located in the operated area, he will have to notify about the situation to the professional; it is probable that the doctor will give a prescript medication that will relief the discomfort. Physical activity is recommended to be resumed after one month from the operation; the first week after the surgery, the patient should not have to make physical effort such as heavy lifting. Normally, patients who undergo this type of surgery are able to resume work after two days from the operation; however there are some cases where the patient may need extra resting days. Sexual intercourse is suggested to be resumed after one week from the operation; this is because the doctor have to be sure that the wounds are completely closed.

  • Possible complications

Complications in a laparoscopic varicocelectectomy are rare. However there is a low rate of abdominal injury (1%). Testicular injury and hydrocele formation are also very strange and unusual and they occur in a 1% of the cases. The surgery presents a high improvement in the sperm count that can rise to the 70%. Two common complications that appear in all the surgeries are the risk of having an infection or an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. To prevent this situation, the doctor will recommend special tips that will help to avoid an infection. Among the tips, it is probable that he will advise the patient to take care of the post surgery process by following hygiene measures and taking antibiotics or prescript medication. Cases of an adverse reaction to the anesthesia are rare, because the anesthesiologist is sure, before the operation, that he has chosen the right anesthesia. It is for sure, that the anesthesiologist will make a few questions to the patient and will investigate his clinical history in order to determine the right type of anesthesia.

  • What does the surgery do

The surgery will improve the normal functions of the body of the patient because the blood will pass naturally through veins. The circulation improves considerably after this operation. The development during sexual intercourse will not be affected by the operation; the patient will be able to enjoy this activity normally with his couple.

  • What does the surgery not do

The surgery will not be followed with a special medication that will have to be taken by the patient for many years. It is true that if the patient feels pain, he will have a specific medication; in other cases doctors recommend having antibiotics for one or two weeks after the operation.
