Urethroplasty Surgery

Urethroplasty Surgery

Relevant information about Urethroplasty Surgery.

  • What does the surgery consist on

The surgery is used to repair an injury or a disorder which is located in the urethra. The operation is performed when the patient presents a urethra stenosis. The stenosis is an internal scar of the organ that decreases its calibre. It can be generated for many reasons such as, a cognitive infection that is detected during the childhood, or as an after effect of a previous surgery that has taken place in the urethra.

  • Which problem does the surgery solve

The surgery is used in patients that have many problems as a result of an injury that is located in the urethra. Some of the problems that are a consequence of disorders of the urethra are: a decrease of the normal functions of the organ decreasing the miction quality, apparition of symptoms related to the undeveloped organ and severe risks that in some cases can include a vital risk for the patient.

  • How is the surgery performed

The surgery will be performed under general, local or regional anesthesia. Once the patient has entered to the operating room and is completely numbed, the surgeon will start by using an innovative technique. The technique consists on the aperture of the urethra at the level of the penile. The surgeon will have to search where is located the stenosis. Depending on the location and the length of the stenosis, the doctor will decide if a reconstruction is possible at the same time, or if it will be necessary to leave the urethra open in order to make the regeneration easier. In the definitive reconstruction, sometimes it is necessary to use plus tissues or other materials that replace and help the natural organ to continue having a good function. In the majority of the cases, the patient will have a urethral catheter during some time; the length of the period where the patient will have to use the catheter will depend on the type of operation that patient has undergone.

  • Surgery length: The surgery is estimated to last from two to four hours. Depending on the surgeon and on the case, it will be performed under general or local anesthesia. Before the operation, nurses will make a routine check of the blood pressure and temperature of the patient. In the majority of the cases, patients have to stay one day after the operation, so a complete recovery is guaranteed. Patients that undergo an urethroplasty, require catheter drainage for three weeks. The patient will have to be accompanied by a relative at the moment of leaving hospital.

  • How is the post surgery process

The post surgery process will be a little slow. As the patient has to use a special catheter during three weeks, it is recommended to rest and to recover during this period of time. After the surgery, the patient will have periodical visits to the doctor in order to regulate if the recovery process is going well. If the patient presents or feels discomfort or pain in the area that was operated, it is important to notify about this situation to the professional. The doctor will decide if it is appropriate and necessary to give medication for the pain. The patient will be able to resume his/her normal activities after three weeks from the operation. Physical activity is suggested to be resumed at least after two months from the operation; the main reason for this is not making pressure or effort. However, doctors recommend being in movement, for example walking and being up, because this improves the circulation and blood pressure of the patient.

  • Possible complications

Among the possible complications of the operation we can find, not gaining an improvement in the miction quality; the apparition of urinary incontinence, that could be permanent or temporary; perforation of the urethra during the operation that can provoke irrigation liquid passing the periurethral structures; partial or total impotence; urethral fistulas that its treatment could be complex and finally, perforation of the rectum that implies the performance of other type of intervention. Related to the anesthesia, there are not high risks, with the exception of an adverse reaction to the chemical compose of the anesthesia. To prevent this situation, the anesthesiologist will make previous tests to the patient in order to determinate if he/she is allergic to any substance.

  • What does the surgery do

By having an urethroplasty, patient and doctors expect to have an improvement in some issues. The patient is expected to have an improvement in the miction quality. Doctors expect to suppress the permanent bladder catheter (in cases where the patient is using one). In some cases, doctors may have to perform periodic urethral dilatations, and in other patients sometimes it is necessary to make other interventions. Anyway, it is important to remark that a urethroplasty will always improve the quality of life of the patient as well as it guarantees the complete development of the functions of the entire body of the patient. Patients who undergo this type of surgery will be able to enjoy life in ways that could not been exploit when they have problems in the urethra. Professionals recommend performing an urethroplasty as soon as the doctor confirms that the patient may need one. It has been proven that if the patient does not undergo this operation in the appropriate moment, the progression and persistence of the symptoms rise considerably.

  • What does the surgery not do

The surgery will not be accompanied with special medication that will have to be taken during the entire life of the patient. In some cases, doctors give prescript medication; this situation is for patients that feel pain after the operation and cannot hold the discomfort. Depending on each case, the doctor will determine if it is necessary to give a special medication to the patient, taking in account the clinical history of the patient.
