Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Relevant information about Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

  • An overview of the treatment

There are different models that take as it bases the contributions of the psychoanalysis. So when we speak of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can be talking to both of classical psychoanalysis and other psychodynamic approaches.

The methods are based on psychoanalytic concepts promoted by Sigmund Freud from early twentieth century. Even today, the theoretical body of psychoanalysis is in constant development.

One of the central hypotheses of psychoanalytic practice argues that our early experiences strongly influence our psychological development and, therefore, how then face relationships with those around us. Therefore, the analysis focuses on the introspective study of human beings experience through which they seek to address different types of conflicts.

The analysis seeks to transform the individual through joint work between therapist and patient. From the classical approach, the word is the main instrument to approach the understanding and transformation of human suffering.

Currently, there are several treatments that do not restrict the use of the word and come to different expressions, such as, music or theater.

In the course of therapy, the patient thinks, not only on an intellectual level but emotionally about the processes behind their difficulties. The therapist's main tools to carry out this task is the interpretation, construction and pointing.

  • What problem/ s is expected to be solved

Theoretically, the psychoanalytic therapeutic process rests on the existence of the unconscious. In other words, it assumes that individuals do not have absolute control over the factors that determine their emotions and behavior.

Thus, these unconscious factors can be a source of considerable unrest and discomfort, being expressed often through training symptomatic, or personality disorders, difficulties in work or love relationships, mood swings and problems with self-esteem.

Psychoanalytic treatment aims to reveal how these unconscious factors affecting interpersonal relations and individual behavior training, link them to their historical origins, showing how they have developed, help the individual cope with their adult  reality.

  • How is it carried out

The device address may be individual psychotherapy, group or family. The suitability of either approach depends on the situation of the patient.

After an initial diagnostic session, where the patient has specific needs, the therapist suggests a fair amount of matches, which can vary from once to five times a week. In this way, the work to resolve the discomfort can be guided continuously and intensively.

Therapists are trained to work in situations where they become intensively involved in the relationship with their patients. Numerous studies confirm that is the best way for patients to achieve significant results.

In a classic meeting of psychoanalysis, the patient comes to the meeting, lie on a couch and tells everything that comes to mind at the moment. This situation, known as the "psychoanalytic approach, allows the emergence of aspects of the mind which can not be accessed by other methods of observation.

Other psychotherapies go to other experiences to discover the unconscious aspects. Music therapy, for instance, draws on the musical experience.

Through these "discoveries", the patient will develop their conflicts, work that is imposed on the psyche through various means: the lifting of repression, interpretation of the movement, overcoming divisions and dissociations, the relationship between representations attenuation of anxiety and basic anxieties, deepening on identificatory components pathogens, pathologizing disaffection on real objects, and so on.

  • Expectable time

The duration of classical psychoanalytic therapy depends on the patient. Is the same patient who will undertake a process of introspection, may thus give a glimpse into the origins of their conflicts.

Therefore, one can not speak of time estimates. Some therapies take months, others years.

In this section, special attention should be paid so-called brief dynamic psychotherapies. This approach aims to produce psychotherapeutic change within a minimum time period, usually no more than 20 sessions. Some cases of brief psychotherapy are Balin Focal psychotherapy and psychotherapy Mann limited time.

  • Expectable Results

The psychoanalytic and dynamic psychotherapies serve a diverse spectrum of disorders. Individuals who suffer from chronic anxiety and depression, who have problems with relationships, those who inexplicably feel a general apathy can be a significant benefit if they undertake psychotherapy.

They are also treatable addiction problems, personality disorders and eating disorders, among many other types of neurosis.

In this sense, it is worth to say that some recent investigations that have questioned the effectiveness of the therapies, affirm that the patients that improve more with the psycotherapies are those healthier, that is to say, those than register less psychological upheavals.

However, at this point is very valuable to recall the definition of Jacques Lacan, a French psychoanalyst who made fundamental contributions to the course of the discipline: "Psychoanalysis is a therapy that is not like others." From a psychoanalytic therapy should not expect health or normal, it should be expected to affect the destiny, that human existence becomes something different from what would have been the same there without going through the analysis. So, although sometimes the road may seem uncertain, the results are often surprising.
