Relevant information about Music Therapy: Guided Imagination and Music (G.I.M.).
Music therapy can be defined based on the words that compose it:
- Therapy: treatment, healing, help.
- Music: Art of combining sounds. The raw material of music are the sounds. The sound is a vibration that is transmitted by an elastic medium is the air and comes to a teacher who is hearing.
Brief music therapy is a treatment or cure type that uses the effects of hearing or musical interpretation psychotherapeutic purposes.
Most notable is the ability of music to mobilize the human being in both the physical and psychic. Music therapy uses the power of music towards the achievement of therapeutic goals, maintaining, improving and restoring the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of people.
This discipline covers a wide range of clinical practice, depending on the frame and the orientation of the music therapist. The differences are given by the theoretical or empirical underpinning work, the assessment made by each team or specialized vocational goals or procedures defined for each case. By this in the educational setting, music therapy will be done differently to that undertaken in a rehabilitation setting, psychotherapy or medical.
The intervention process that uses musical experiences to stimulate changes in the patient, can be applied in two ways:
- Active: singing, music and movement, playing instruments, listening.
- Incoming: methods of relaxation and guided imagery (consider the patient's inner world or in ourselves.) This includes the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music.
According to the scope and the model used, music therapy will be included in any of these five models:
- Model Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, Creative and improvisational
- Model GIM (Guided Imaginery and Music) or Guided Imagination and Music
- Analytical Model of Music Therapy
- Music Therapy Model behaviorist
Next we will concentrate in model G.I.M of guided imagination and music.
- An overview of the treatment
Model G.I.M. deed in the 60's and as such is reaching its maximum height in the seventies. Depending on their theoretical foundations, it is considered a humane method. The author is Helen Bonny, a music therapist in the U.S.
In the seventies, Bonny was interested in exploring the unconscious in the therapeutic field and did so through programs of classical music that she herself developed. His work took place at the Psychiatric Research Institute of Maryland (Baltimore) for the completion of his doctoral thesis. In the development of their research, Bonny was discovered that, when subjected to the person on a journey through music, guided imagery that the person felt they became powerful symbols for self-knowledge and personal growth. It set up programs of classical music, with a duration of thirty and forty-five minutes each, with the intention to get in touch with the mood of the person at that time. They were numerous and varied clinical and psychological responses of this method.
Helen Bonny in 1972 founded the Institute for Consciusness and Music "where they began to train therapists to work with this model. There are two fundamental aspects of work: The ability of music to provoke both synesthesia (mixture of impressions of different senses) and "altered states of consciousness," says Helen Bonny or as "the use of music to reach extraordinary levels of human consciousness. "
Generalales speaking, the method of guided imagery in music, proposes to give expression to thoughts and emotions, which are clearer when the music gives them a reality through images and sensations.
- What problem/ s is expected to be solved
The method of Guided Imagery for music shared goals, with the rest of the schools of music therapy to facilitate and promote communication, relationships, learning, movement, expression, organization and other relevant therapeutic targets, meet the needs physical, emotional, mental, social and cognitive development potential and / or restore the functions of the individual, better integration and ultimately a better quality of life.
In these terms, is aimed at all those people who are experiencing emotional or existential crisis in his life and is manifested through symptoms. These include: panic attacks, anxiety, depression, irritability permanent separation from partner, labor crisis, dissatisfaction and discomfort or disinterest chronic fatigue, chronic muscle tension and psychosomatic illnesses, among others.
However, with regard specifically to the Model Bonny, it is geared towards more specific problems and objectives. The therapist who works with this method will seek and focus on the self-knowledge by the urgency of alleviating a symptom. Help the patient explore their inner world, for this you get to know yourself better, but will not seek to treat the symptoms. Usually used with people with a capacity for symbolic thought, toward the goal that they can achieve extraordinary levels of human consciousness.
It is used ultimately to help people find, through unknown states of consciousness, growth and welfare.
A music therapy treatment begins with an interview where the clinical and musical history of the patient is elaborated. This takes the name of Clinical Interview. Depending on the case and the issues raised, the therapist develops a plan of action or particular planning. In the following sessions will be working with various technical issues and problems located.
We have commented that the intervention process that uses musical experiences to stimulate changes in the patient, can be applied in two ways:
- Active: singing, music and movement, playing instruments, listening.
- Incoming: methods of relaxation and guided imagery.
Bonny Method type is responsive, is based on listening to music in a relaxed state to suggest images, symbols and emotions with a creative purpose as an aid to introspection, and as a basis for therapeutic action. There is a first warm-up time during which the therapist comes in contact with the patient and assess their condition. After establishing the idea under which they work, the material to be used in the activity is choose and starts the session, during which the patient interpreted or hear different music.
Each session of the method of guided imagery and music consists of four phases:
- Physical Relaxation - concentration - induced psychological
Sessions can be individual or in group. Energy mobilization is essential for the person to explore their inner world through music.
Music by establishing a communication link between doctor and patient, thereby achieving improvements in the various disorders. This process uses different techniques, depending on each person and their problems. This will also variable duration of each treatment and each case will be particularized.
Overall, the therapy consists of weekly or daily meetings, individual or in group, each session is a warm-up phase, during which the therapist comes in contact with the patient and assess their condition. Treatments usually last a minimum of six months without being scheduled or standardized completion. Treatments are not usually extend over many years, lasting approximately 1 year or 2.
All therapeutic process seeking the health, welfare and harmony of the individual participant. Here, the introduction of musical elements helps the patient to abandon or reduce the usual control over himself, entering more easily into their inner world. It facilitates the release of intense emotions and contributes to the experience of a "peak experience." Also continues to experience a place of mind where time does not exist (unconscious) with the resulting greater self-awareness. This type of phenomena possible to build a lead and thread structure to experience.
While these are the objectives it pursues and promotes music therapy guided imagery and music, in general, the results expected from this type of treatment are:
- Progressive awareness and responsibility of the person for their actions
- The mobilization of stored feelings, unknown or obscure.
- Raising the person's physical energy
- Release emotional and mental stress
- The increment of the expressive power of emotions
- Expanding the ability to contact their own experiences;
Music therapy for Guided Imagery and Music is not an alternative therapy, has nothing to do with magic, the random or esoteric. Therefore, it can only be as long as you enable a link between patient-therapist on a particular frame, using music as a tool and the endless possibilities it provides sound. Accompanying this for a theoretical framework that supports the task.
All those practices that are outside of these parameters can be pleasing and include a share of satisfaction but not framed within the discipline.
Moreover, we discussed that with this method the therapist aims to help the patient explore his inner world. Therefore, it is not a primary objective to try to eradicate the symptoms. While it remains alien to them and the suffering they cause, their focus is on enabling and promoting the patient's awareness of himself for the therapeutic work on symptoms.
