Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik Eye Surgery

Relevant information about Lasik Eye Surgery.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a type of refractive surgery for correcting myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Lasik is performed by ophthalmologists using a laser. Lasik provides benefits such as faster patient recovery. Lasik surgery procedure represents an advance over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and is a viable alternative to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients. Lasik is a treatment that reshapes the cornea in order to produce clear vision. Because refractive errors impede the focusing ability of the eye, patients who suffer from these conditions experience blurred vision. Lasik Eye Surgery provides patient with vision disabilities with an effective treatment option, where a predetermined amount of corneal tissue is removed. This reshaping of the cornea improves the eye’s focusing power and patient´s vision field and range.

  • Sings and problems treated

Tree main illnesses are corrected by the Lasik Eye Surgery procedure: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Patient with myopia see near objects clearly but far away objects appear blurred. With myopia, the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is too steep, so images are focused in the vitreous inside the eye rather than on the retina at the back of the eye. Hyperopia is a defect of vision caused by a structural anomaly in the eye (when the eyeball is too short or the lens cannot become round enough), causing difficulty focusing on near objects, and in extreme cases causing a sufferer to be unable to focus on objects at any distance. Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Sometimes astigmatism results from an irregularly shaped lens, which is located behind the cornea. The most coomon sing of the illness is eye blurry vision, but may also product headaches or eye strain and distort or blur patient´s vision at all distances.

  • Treatments and lasik characteristics

For most people, laser choice makes no significant difference. Most ophthalmologist agree that surgeon skill and experience and the quality of care before and after a corrective eye surgery procedure are far more critical factors affecting final Lasik results. The development of the excimer laser (a form of ultraviolet laser) made Lasik Eye Surgery possible.
Excimer lasers are incredibly precise, only penetrating a microscopic amount of tissue at a time for remarkable accuracy. New-generation microkeratomes (a hand-held device) provide increased accuracy and safety for Lasik eye surgeons during the creation of the corneal flap. A microkeratome allows the surgeon access to the cornea so irregularities can be corrected.

  • Anesthesia: Generally, the anesthesia used in this kind of procedure is local, using topical eye drops over the patient´s to reduce pain and movement. However, the surgeon might give patient a mild oral sedative beforehand.

  • Treatments and Surgery duration

To determine whether or not a patient is a good candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery, the ophthalmologist will conduct a pre- Lasik eye examination. Once completed, patients must follow certain guidelines before surgery. Lasik eye surgery is an ambulatory procedure. Patients return home after procedure is completed. In fact, the actual surgery usually takes less than five minutes.

Ophthalmologist doctor will have patient lie down, then make sure patient eye is positioned directly under the laser (one eye is operated on at a time). A kind of retainer is placed under patient´s eyelids to keep them open. This technique is just a little uncomfortable.

The surgeon will use an ink marker to mark the cornea before a flap is created. The ophthalmologist creates the flap on the outer surface of the eye to expose the underlying cornea. The flap can be created with a microkeratome or with the intralase laser, which allows the surgeon to create the flap using a computer-guided laser. The cornea is then reshaped using an excimer laser and the flap is replaced.

  • How is the post-surgery process

Immediately after Lasik, the doctor will have patient rest for a bit, then he can go home (but he must not drive himself home). Once at home, patient should relax for at least a few hours. Patient may be able to go to work the next day, but many surgeons advise a couple of days of rest instead. They also recommend no strenuous exercise for up to a week, since this can traumatize the eye and affect healing. Patient must avoids rubbing his/her eye, cause there is a chance (though slim) of dislodging the corneal flap. Patients are usually given a course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Patients are usually told to sleep much more and are also given a darkened pair of shields to protect their eyes from bright lights. They also are required to moisturize the eyes with preservative-free tears and follow directions for prescription drops.

  • Possible complications

Although Lasik eye surgery is an advance and efficient procedure, as any medical surgery complications might appear. Irregular astigmatism can result from a less than smooth corneal surface. Irregular astigmatism also can occur from laser correction that is not centered properly on the eye. Resulting symptoms may include double vision (diplopia) or "ghost images”. A new surgery, may be another type one, will be needed. Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis (DLK) is inflammation under the Lasik flap that may have several causes. If the inflammation of the cornea after Lasik surgery is uncontrolled, as in DLK, it can interfere with healing and cause vision loss. If DLK occurs, it usually responds to therapies such as antibiotics and topical steroids. The flap also might need to be lifted and rinsed for removal of inflammatory cells and to prevent tissue damage. Finally, Keratectasia is bulging of the eye's surface that can result from a flap that is cut too deeply, when too much tissue is removed from the cornea during Lasik or when the cornea initially was weakened as evidenced from corneal topography mapping prior to Lasik. Resulting distorted vision likely cannot be corrected with laser enhancement, and gas or corneal implants may be prescribed to hold the cornea in place.

Less serious complications that generally clear up on their own as the eye heals, including halos, haze and glare.

  • Treatments Advantages

The following is a list of illness that the Lasik Eye Surgery could cure or help to improve:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness).
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness).
  • Astigmatism.

Lasik eye surgery benefits include improvement in visual activity and freedom from corrective eyewear. Patients who achieve a successful Lasik outcome can eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses, and enjoy the freedom of clear vision at all times

  • Treatments Disadvantages

Some illness could results after the procedure, by wrong surgeon praxis or surgery failure. It is also important to remind that second or third procedures might be needed by the patient. This will be determinate by the ophthalmologist. It will depend of the patient´s eye needs.
