Laparoscopic Ureterolithotomy Surgery
Relevant information about Laparoscopic Ureterolithotomy Surgery.
- What does the surgery consist on
A laparoscopic ureterolithotomy is a less invasive procedure and a good alternative that can replace an open surgery. The laparoscopic method is thought to be more successful, especially if it is practiced in the upper and middle ureter. A laparoscopic ureterolithotomy removes large amounts of stones that cannot be eliminated by an endoscopic procedure.
- Which problem does the surgery solve
The surgery will solve the problem of having stones in the ureter. This technique has been gaining popularity during the last few years because it is a less invasive procedure that gives several advantages to the patient. For being a procedure that is performed in a less-invasive manner, the patient is safer during the operation (compared with an open surgery) and the effectiveness of the surgical procedure is also very high. Patients that undergo a laparoscopic ureterolithotomy will be able to enjoy a better and easier recovery, without feeling a lot of pain caused by large incisions which are made in the affected area.
- How is the surgery performed
First of all, the surgeon will use general anesthesia in order to numb the entire patient-s body. Once the patient has been sedated, the surgeon will place a double J stent. The patient will have a 45º lateral position that will help the surgeon to find the affected area and to work through the patient´s body. The professional will make bony landmarks in order to have a reference of the location of the stones. Then, he/she will use special instruments that will help during the entire surgery. He/she will make from three to four incisions that will be pretty useful because through them, the surgeon will pass the instruments and a tube that has in its top a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a small camera that will be in charge of showing the inside of the patient’s body. All the images filmed by the laparoscope will be reproduced in a monitor that will be used by the surgeon. The goal of the laparoscope is to help the surgeon to find where the stones are and where he/she will have to remove them. The laparoscopic method is not only used in this surgery, nowadays it is becoming a very popular way of performing surgery, because of the several advantages that it brings. The patient will experience less pain; this is because the small incisions are easier to heal than a large incision, which is done in an open surgery.
- Surgery length: The surgery is estimated to last from one to two hours, depending on the surgeon and the case. It is probable (this will depend on the clinic), that before the operation a nurse will make sure that the patient’s body is in normal conditions. She will probably check if the blood pressure and the temperature of the body are usual. Once the patient has entered to the operating room, he/she will be sedated with general anesthesia. After the surgery is performed, the patient will enter to a special room where she/he will be able to rest. If the effect of the anesthesia has gone quickly, the patient will be able to leave the hospital during the same day of the surgical procedure. On the other side, if the patient feels that he/she is too tired; doctors will probably recommend him/her to stay at least one night in the hospital, to get the necessary rest to be able to leave and get a full recovery without additional care.
- How is the post surgery process
As this is a surgery that is performed under a laparoscopic method, the post surgery process will not be more complicated than in an open operation. It is possible for the patients to feel pain around the incisions made by the surgeon; if this happens, it is essential for both patient and doctor to inform about this situation. After a few days from the operation the patient will have to follow a specific diet that will be given to him/her. The aim of the diet is to incorporate liquids and soft foods that will not damage the recovery or the organism. Normal activities can be resumed after a few days from the operation, this includes going back to work, driving, having sexual intercourse, doing tranquil exercise, among others. If the patient feels that he/she is really tired after one week from the operation he/she should tell this to the doctor. Physical exercise and holding heavy things is not indicated; the patient will be able to resume sports or physical activities that require strength after one or two months from the operation; this decisions will be taken with the supervision of a professional. It is really important to have periodic visits to the doctor in order to check and control if the post surgery process is going well.
Among the possible complications we can find, the risk of an infection, swelling or redness around the incisions and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. The doctor will take particular measures that will decrease the percentage of having an infection. Some of these measures are, taking antibiotics to prevent the formation of bacteria, and following cleanness and hygiene rules. If the patient is capable of fulfilling the indications given by the doctor, it is very unlikely to suffer an infection. Adverse effects caused by the use of anesthesia are rare cases; to prevent this situation, nurses and the team of surgeons will make a test in order to check how the patient´s body reacts to the anesthesia.
The patient will be able to enjoy different and a great variety of activities without suffering discomfort or pain. These surgeries will relief the patient, because he/she will have a healthier way of life.
- What does the surgery not do
The surgery will not affect other organ of the patient. The operation will be focused on the removal of the stones that are located in the ureter of the patient.
