Laparoscopic Nephrectomy Surgery

Laparoscopic Nephrectomy Surgery

Relevant information about Laparoscopic Nephrectomy Surgery.

  • What does the surgery consist on

A laparoscopic nephrectomy is used to remove all or a part of a kidney. It is used in several cases, for transplantation of the organ and when a patient presents problems of cancer or may have an infected kidney.

  • Which problem does the surgery solve

This surgery will allow the patient to have a renovated organ that will be able to make its normal functions after the operation. A laparoscopy means that it will be a minimal invasive surgery. This innovative technique brings many advantages to the patient. Among them we could say that it has a shorter period of recovery; it will also bring less pain to the patient and finally it presents better cosmetic results related to the healing of the scars.

  • How is the surgery performed

First of all the surgeon will make four or five small incisions in the affected area; the surgeon will insert a tube that has a small camera in its top, this will be inserted through the first incision that was made. The rest of the incisions will be very useful for the professional because through them, the doctor will insert others instruments that he may need during the surgical procedure. The kidney will be taken out through anther incision that could be bigger than the others and which is situated near the belly button. Professionals will use general anesthesia during the entire procedure. The larges incision will be closed with staples; smaller incisions will be closed with stitches. This stitches may be removed by the doctor after seven days of the operation; however there are cases where there is no need of removing this element because it has been already dissolved by the acids of the own patient´s body.

  • Surgery length: The surgery is estimated to last from two to four hours. It is probable that the patient may have to stay in the hospital from two to four days, after the operation. In the majority of the cases, doctors and surgeons prefer the patient to stay in the hospital because this assures them that it he/she will be taken care of by nurses and that it will not be any complication during the recovery process. Before the surgical procedure, the patient will have to have an appointment in his/her medical centre that will be useful to check his health state. It is important for the patient to tell the doctor if he/she is taking any medication. If the patient is accustomed to have a special medication each morning, it is probable that the nurse will ask the patient to have it the same morning of the operation. A few hours before the surgery the nurse will put a small tube in the vein of the patient. This tube is called an intravenous, its function is to regulate fluids before, during and after the operation.

  • How is the post surgery process

Immediately after the surgery the patient will be taken to a special room that is called post-anesthetic care unit. The patient will be watched until the effect of the anesthesia has gone. If the patient feels uncomfortable or has any pain it is important to tell the nurse because she will give a medication to treat it. Later, the patient will be taken to the ward; in the ward the nurse will check the blood pressure as well as his/her breathing, heart rate and incisions. The intravenous tube will be taken after the patient starts to have liquids by him/herself. Professionals recommend to do slow movements after the surgery because it brings a lot of advantages to the patient. Among these advantages we can say that keeping in movement helps breathing and circulation problems and also help with bowel movement. A group of nurses will teach the patient to do breathing exercise because they are very useful during the post surgery process. The patient will be able to take a shower the same day of the operation; if the patient is still having the intravenous tube, the nurse will be in charge of keeping it dry. The patient will be able to have a tub bath once the incisions have healed. It is important to clean the area that was operated but only by using water. The patient should not use soap or any cleaning products because it could bring an allergic reaction in the affected area. The patient will start his/her diet with the incorporation of fluids; this includes water and cranberry juices. When the patient does not present any complication in the incorporation of liquids, he/she will be able to introduce soft food into the diet. The type of diet will depend on the severity of the procedure and also in the response of the organism to the operation; it will be checked by professionals including nurses and doctors. Nurses will monitor if the patient feels extreme cases; the amount of pain will vary depending on each patient. A great part of the pain is caused by gases that are left in the abdomen. One of the ways for preventing pain is by walking; walking helps the patient to have bowel movements.

  • Possible complications

It is important to control if the patient has any sign of infection; some of the signs of infection are: fever, increased swelling and redness around the affected area, felling unwell and tiredness. It is important for the patient to tell the doctor immediately if he/she presents some of this symptoms; it is probable that the doctor will give special medication to stop the infection.

  • What does the surgery do

The surgery will allow the patient to have a better lifestyle because he/she will feel that his/her entire organism is doing its normal functions in a right way. This type of surgery brings many benefits that allow the patient to enjoy his/her life in a different way.

  • What does the surgery not do

The surgery will not bring any adverse problem; all the advantages that are related to this operation are based on a complete recovery of the patient and a gain of the normal functions of his/her organism.
