Intraocular Lens Surgery

Intraocular Lens Surgery

Relevant information about Intraocular Lens Surgery.

The intraocular lens is an implanted lens in the eye, usually replacing the existing crystalline lens because it has been clouded over by a cataract, or as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye's optical power. Collamer is a lens´s material made with collagen and copolymer that provides total biocompatibility and an optical excellent functioning to the patient.

Collamer transmits the light in a similar way to crystalline because the characteristics of the materials are almost identical to those that compose crystalline human eye.

  • When is needed

The best candidates have moderate to high nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). Patients must be over the age of 21 and have good health physically. Lens can be also implanted in case of cataracts problem, an eye accident or other problems and illness that cause eye´s lens malfunctions.

  • Collamer lens´s characteristics

The Collamer has internal anti-reflected interface thanks to big water concentration in the surface, higher than inside the lens. 40 % of the lens is water. The high concentration of water in the surface allows a gradual change of the refraction index from the watery humor (internal fluid of the eye) to the lens. In fact, the bosses of light associated with Collamer's lenses are almost identical to those of the crystalline human being.

The Collamer facilitates the compatibility of the lens with the eye disabling the inflammatory response.

Electro-chemical protection has been developed in this lens too. The collagen of the Collamer lens has a negative ionic load. In the same way, the proteins of the eye´s watery also have a negative load. When these two negative forces coincide with the interface of the lens/watery, the repulsion of the load repels the proteins, avoiding his adhesion to the surface of the lens.

  • Anesthesia: Generally, local anesthesia is use in this type of procedure.
  • Surgery length: The day of the surgery, the ophthalmologist will place eye drops in patient´s eye to dilate (enlarge) its pupil.

Once eye pupil is fully dilated, ophthalmologist will place numbing eye drops in the eye and will give to the patient a shot of numbing medication. Ophthalmologist may discuss alternative anesthetic/sedation options with patient before surgery.

A small incision is made into the cornea and the lens is inserted and positioned in its proper position. The entire procedure will take 20 to 30 minutes.

After the surgery is complete, your doctor will place eye drops or ointment in your eye. For your protection and comfort, your doctor may apply a patch or shield over your eye. The procedure is virtually painless because of the numbing medication. It is important that you do not drive yourself home and that you make arrangements before the day of your surgery for transportation home.

  • How is the post-surgery process

After the surgery is complete, ophthalmologist would place eye drops or ointment in patient eye. For his/her protection and comfort, ophthalmologist may apply a patch or shield over the operated eye. The procedure is virtually painless because of the numbing medication. It is important that patient does not drive himself home and that he make arrangements before the day of your surgery for transportation home.

Improved vision is often noticed the same day as surgery, and patients fully heal within a month.

  • Possible Complications

As in any surgery procedure, infection is the most frecuently problems that might appear. Despite the fact that Collamer lens have biocompatibility with the eye compositions, there are chances (although very reduce) of body rejecting. Certain inflammatory conditions can cause severe post-operative complications such as cornea or flap inflammation, or thinning of the corneal flap, which could result in permanent loss of vision.

On the other hand, because the procedure is fairly new, very little is known about the long-term effects of the procedure.

  • Treatments Advantages

      Implantable Collamer lens could:

  • Restore eye vision´s field, focus and range.
  • Release patient of using glasses.
  • Improve biocompatibility of the lens with the eye.
  • Result a better option than normal plastic lens.

  • Treatments Disadvantages

If the patient´s vision abilities have been reduced in a very high grade, lens may result not enough to correct the problem. Patient eye´s specific conditions may also complicate the whole process.
