IntraLasik Surgery
Relevant information about IntraLasik Surgery. The Intralasik procedure is a type of refractive eye surgery similar to Lasik Eye Surgery that creates a corneal flap with a femtosecond laser microkeratome rather than with a mechanical microkeratome, which uses a steel blade. IntraLASIK is often marketed as "all laser, blade-free". IntraLasik can be performed with any excimer laser that is able to perform Lasik, including conventional, wavefront-optimized, or wavefront-guided ablation. IntraLasik can be used to surgically create monovision to enhance patient´s ability to see objects both distant and near for those affected by presbyopia. The IntraLasik procedure allows for a greater degree of accuracy to be achieved while reducing the frequency and severity of postoperative complications.
The IntraLasik can be used for patients with thinner and flatter corneas. Thus, patients who were once turned away from Lasik may be considered candidates for IntraLasik. IntraLasik procedure is commonly used over patients with presbyopia. This is a health condition where the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects. Presbyopia's exact mechanisms are not known with certainty; the research evidence most strongly supports a loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens, although changes in the lens's curvature and loss of power of theciliary muscles (the muscles that bend and straighten the lens) have also been postulated as its cause. Also, Astigmatism (inability to perform a clear focus over near or far objects) IntraLasik results are highly predictable. Shot, far and long sightedness can also be treated with success.
Patient will be given a set of instructions to help him/her prepare for the procedure. Patient must not wear contact lenses for the advised period beforehand. Patient will also be given instructions on lid hygiene and should only be performed before the procedure. Depending on the patient's eye anatomy, the ophthalmologist has the ability to customize the creation of the corneal flap. Because everyone's eyes are uniquely shaped, individualizing the corneal flap produces favorable outcomes. Anaesthetic and antibiotic drops will be placed in patient´s eyes, and the area around his/her eyes will be cleaned with antiseptic. It is recommended that patient wears something comfortable that day. The IntraLasik procedure works using an "inside-out" process, focusing the beam of light at a precise point within the stroma (corneal tissue). The laser creates thousands of microscopic bubbles that link together to define the precise shape and depth of the flap. These bubbles are then stacked up to the surface of the cornea to complete the flap. The computer-guided laser allows the ophthalmologist to program the exact flap diameter, depth, hinge location and width, and side-cut architecture. Bladeless Lasik is particularly beneficial for patients with thin or thick corneas, factors that might otherwise disqualify them for traditional Lasik surgery. The entire process of creating the corneal flap with all-laser Lasik takes about 30 seconds. Once the corneal flap is created, the surgeon lifts the flap to reveal a pristine corneal surface and proceeds with the laser vision correction portion of the Lasik surgery. The flap created by the IntraLasik procedure is gently lifted and patient will be asked to look at a flashing red light while his/her cornea is reshaped. This takes between 15 and 45 seconds. The flap is then replaced and allowed time to dry. Antibiotic drops are applied to prevent infection. The second eye is then treated once the laser has been recalibrated and all the disposable instruments, gloves and materials have been replaced. Only procedures that use the IntraLasik laser for creating the corneal flap can be considered all-laser Lasik.
When the procedure is over patient will be given extra eye drops and protective eyewear and asked to sit in a waiting room with his/her eyes closed. Before patient leaves the centre his/her eyes will be re-examined to ensure his/hers flaps are fine and that he/she is able to see approximately driving standard (it will still be foggy though). Patient will need to arrange for someone to take him/her home as you may feel drowsy after the procedure. Once at home, patient will be given eye drops that must be applied as instructed, and careful verbal and written instructions about he/she aftercare will be given to you and a close relative. Patient may feel a little discomfort after the surgery, similar to the sensation patient feel when he/she has something in his/her eye. Patient will be asked to close his/her eyes and rest for at least four hours, after which he/she will feel much more comfortable. Patient must wear protective eyewear for the first 24 hours after surgery and then at bedtime for four weeks. This will prevent him/her from rubbing his/her eyes in his/her sleep or when you first wake up.
As in any kind of surgery, although IntraLasik is a bladeless procedure, infection could affect the treated eye. On the other hand, another surgery might be needed, cause an ophthalmologist´s decition or the failure or uncompleted success of the first one. It´s also important to remind that the grade of success (the grade of vision field, focusing power and range improved) will depend of the eye´s surgery previous condition (the patient´s eye illness grade of advance).
