Hysterectomy Surgery

Hysterectomy Surgery

Relevant information about Hysterectomy Surgery.

  • What does the surgery consist on

Hysterectomy consists on the surgical removal of the uterus. In the majority of the cases it is performed by a gynecologist. There are two different ways to do a hysterectomy; it can be a total removal of the organ, or it can be a partial removal. It is one of the most common gynecological procedures that are performed all around the world. In almost 90% of the cases, hysterectomy is performed in women who have fibroids (benign tumors).

  • Which problem does the treatment solve

The procedure of hysterectomy is recommended in specific cases. It is suggested, for women who might have certain types of reproductive cancer; it can be used as a prophylactic method with women who suffer from a genetic history of previous cancer in their families or as a recovery from having cancer; for patients who suffer from a severe endometriosis; and in some cases this operation is used in transmen as a part of their gender transition. This surgical procedure is used in for treating problems related to the entire female reproductive complex. There are many techniques that are used in hysterectomy; the most common one is the abdominal incision. Hysterectomy is well known for being an efficient method of treating diverse disorders related to the women´s health and the correct operation of its reproductive system.

  • How is the surgery performed

The oldest technique of making a hysterectomy is by doing a main cut through the abdomen. Nowadays there have been implemented two innovative techniques that are called, laparoscopic surgery and vaginal hysterectomy. The main advantages of these new methods are that they are performed through the vagina instead of the abdomen, and this brings benefits related to a fastest recovery and a disappearance of severe pain. The cost of the procedures changes too; the hysterectomy that is performed through the abdomen, tends to be more expensive than the others. Depending on each case, the surgeon will decide if there is a need to remove the complete organ or only a part of it. In an open hysterectomy (abdomen surgery), the surgeon will make incisions across the belly, in order to remove the uterus. In a MIP hysterectomy (a less invasive surgery), there are several methods than can be used by surgeon, here are some of them: A vaginal hysterectomy is a procedure where the surgeon will make an incision in the vagina and will extract the organ through this incision; a laparoscopic hysterectomy will be performed by using a laparoscope (a tiny camera that is introduced into the patient´s body), the small camera will be inserted through small incision that will be made by the surgeon; a laparoscopic-assisted vagina hysterectomy is similar as the previous method, but the main difference is that the surgeon will remove the uterus through the vagina by using laparoscopic surgical tools; the final technique is called Robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, where the surgeon will have the control of a sophisticated robotic system that will help him in the performance of the operation, the hysterectomy will be able to viewed in a monitor that reproduces 3D images.

  • Surgery length: The surgery is thought to last from one to two hours. The hysterectomy will be performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the hospital, the patient will be asked to do specific tests such as blood and urine samples; in some cases the surgeon will make an enema to the patient in order to determine if the working of her organism is in a correct condition. It is probable that the pelvic and abdominal area will be shaved before the operation. Some hospitals recommend staying one night after the operation in order to check if the patient follows a healthy recovery (this will depend on the type of hysterectomy and the situation of the patient).

  • How is the post surgery process

During the first week after the operation it might be common that the patient will feel pain and discomfort, luckily is possible that the doctor will prescribe medication in order to relieve the pain. The patient will be able to resume her normal activities after one month from the operation, as each patient has a different organism, this will vary depending on the condition of the person who went under a hysterectomy. Sexual activity is recommended to be resumed after 8 weeks from the operation. During the recovery many women fell tired, this will be normal the first weeks after the surgical procedure, it is important to take the adequate time to have a good recovery. Some women assure that doing determinate exercise helped them to have a faster and better recovery period. This issue will have to be discussed with the doctor, he/she is the one who will determinate if it is appropriate to do exercise, and if he/she approves this she/he might recommend specific activities.

  • Possible complications

During the operation there can be problems related to the anesthesia; to avoid this from happening, the doctor will make tests (before the operation) in order to determinate if the patient might have an adverse reaction. There exists the risk of having an infection or bleeding; this will be avoided by taking prescript medication that will be given by the surgeon. Other complications could be injury to internal organs and the loss of the ovarian functions; this happens in very few cases and is not common.

  • What does the surgery do

Most of the women who have gone through this kind of operation assure that their lives have changed considerably. They do not feel pain, and they can enjoy many activities that before the operation would not give any pleasure to them.

  • What does the surgery not do

It will be determined by the doctor if the patient needs a complete removal of the organ or only a partial removal of it. In both cases, the surgeon will not add any implant to the body of the patient, because what the operation does is to extract what is having a bad development and is affecting the rest of the patient’s body.
