Hypermetropia with Lasik Surgery

Hypermetropia with Lasik Surgery

Relevant information about Hypermetropia with Lasik Surgery.

Hypermetropia, also known as far-sightedness, long-sightedness or Hyperopia, is a defect of vision caused by an imperfection in the eye, causing difficulty focusing on near objects, and in advanced cases causing a sufferer to be unable to focus on objects at any distance. As the object moves toward the eye, it must increase its power to keep the image in focus on the retina. If the power of the cornea and lens is insufficient, as in hyperopia, the image will appear blurred. Hyperopia correction is significantly more likely to regress and regress at a greater percentage than myopic correction. Hyperopia with astigmatism is a most challenging refractive surgery correction. With Lasik Surgery, the cornea is reshaped by removing a ring of tissue around the outer edge of the cornea. By leaving the center of the cornea thick and thinning the outer ring, the cornea changes shape relative to the original shape of the cornea to give the net effect of a bulge outward in the center.

  • Hyperopia Sings and Symptoms

Hyperopia is a common vision problem. Patients with hyperopia can see distant objects fine, but have difficulty focusing on objects that are close. To the eye Patients sometimes have headaches or eye strain and could feel fatigued when performing work at close range. If a patient gets these symptoms while wearing his/her eyeglasses or contact lenses, he/she may need an eye exam. This vision problem occurs when light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina, instead than over its surface. The eyeball of a farsighted person is shorter than normal. Farsightedness is often present from birth, but children have a very flexible eye lens, which helps make up for the problem. Most children outgrow the condition. As aging occurs, glasses or contact lenses might be required to correct this vision problem. If the patient has family members who are farsighted, he/she are also more likely to become farsighted.

  • Surgery characteristics

In the past, hyperopia was only treatable with corrective lenses such as glasses or contact lenses. However, in these days the most popular procedure used to correct hyperopia is Lasik surgery.

Lasik surgery works by reshaping the surface of the cornea, enabling it to better focus light. The ophthalmologist cuts a flap into the epithelium, the outer layer of the cornea. Tissue underneath is removed, or ablated with an excimer laser. The goal in farsighted people is to create more of a slope in the cornea, making it easier to focus light on the retina.

Once through, the flap is put back to position and an eye patch is provided to allow it to heal. This surgery could reduce or eliminate your need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

  • Anesthesia: Generally, a mild anesthetic will be administered. Also eye drops are used to numb the eye and avoid pain during the operation. Despite the fact that the operation is pain free, there have been patients who have complained of discomfort.
  • Surgery length: Lasik is an ambulatory procedure. The actual procedure lasts under 10 minutes per eye. Patient walks into the surgery center, has the procedure and walks out again. During the surgery, patient is awake the whole time.

  • How is the post-surgery process

Immediately after Lasik Surgery, the doctor will have patient rest for a while, then he/she can go home (but he must not drive himself home). Once at home, patient should relax for at least a few hours. Patient may be able to go to work the next day, but many ophthalmologists advice a couple of days of rest. They also recommend no strenuous exercise for up to a week, since this can traumatize the eye and affect healing. Patient has to avoid rubbing his/her eye, because there is a chance of dislodging the corneal flap. Patients are usually given a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. . They also are required to moisturize the eyes with preservative-free tears and follow directions for prescription drops.

Patients are usually told to sleep much more and are also given a darkened pair of shields to protect their eyes from bright lights. While patients with hyperopia have reported a great deal of success with the Lasik procedure, patients should consider it carefully. There are many options for sufferers of hyperopia. 30-day extended wear contact lenses can restore vision without the inconvenience of regular contact lenses or an invasive procedure.

  • Possible complications

Although Lasik Eye surgery is an advance and efficient procedure, as any medical surgery complications might appear. Irregular astigmatism can result from a less than smooth corneal surface. Irregular astigmatism also can occur from laser correction that is not centered properly on the eye. Resulting symptoms may include double vision. In this cases, a new surgery, may be another type one, will be needed.

Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis (DLK) is inflammation under the Lasik flap that may have several causes. If the inflammation of the cornea after Lasik surgery is uncontrolled, as in DLK, it can interfere with healing and cause vision loss. If DLK occurs, it usually responds to therapies such as antibiotics and topical steroids given by ophthalmologist. The flap also might need to be lifted and rinsed for removal of inflammatory cells and to prevent tissue damage.

Another possible problem of the treatment, Keratectasia, is a bulging of the eye's surface that can result from a flap that is cut too deeply, when too much tissue is removed from the cornea, or when the cornea initially was weakened as evidenced from corneal topography mapping prior to Lasik. Resulting distorted vision likely cannot be corrected with laser enhancement, and gas or corneal implants may be prescribed to hold the cornea in place by the ophthalmologist.

Less serious complications that generally cure on their own are eye heals, including halos, haze and glare.

  • Treatment Advantage and Disadvantage

The Lasik Surgery has high chances of success in the correction of Hyperopia illness, and the infection risk is reduced because this is a free blade procedure. Apart from Hyperopia, Lasik eye surgery is also effective in two other kinds of eye conditions: myopia and astigmatism.

However, one surgery may be not enough, and ophthalmologist could recommend another or even a third. Illness grade of advance is an important factor in this point.

On the other hand, ophthalmologist’s skill and experience are determinate in these types of surgeries.
