Hydrocelectomy Surgery
Relevant information about Hydrocelectomy Surgery.
- What does the surgery consist on
This surgical procedure is used to correct disorders that are located in the hydrocele. The surgery is also used to prevent the recurrent apparition of this disease. Hydrocele is the apparition of soft swelling in the membrane that surrounds the testes. This disorder can also appear with epididymitis (which consists on the inflammation of the epididymis). The most common symptom of hydrocele is scrotal swelling. Hydrocele can appear in babies, and it can be a congenital disease; when this occurs the surgery treatment is not performed until the child is at least two years old.
- Which problem does the surgery solve
The main purpose of the surgery is to correct any disorder in the hydrocele, and also to prevent its recurrence. The only way to correct hydrocele is by going under a surgery; up to this day, it has not been found another method to treat this disease. Hydroceles occur in the majority of the cases, because of the defective absorption of tissue fluid.
- How is the surgery performed
This problem can be treated by following two different procedures, the first one is the common surgery and the other one is a procedure called aspiration. When the patient goes under an aspiration, the doctor will place a needle into the scrotum and will direct it toward the hydrocele. The aim of aspiration is to extract as much fluid as possible. The disadvantage is that by going under a procedure of aspiration, the chances of a long-term correction are fewer than by going a surgery. There is also, a higher risk of contracting an infection during an aspiration than in a surgery. Going under a surgery is more common in adults who present large and painful hydroceles. General anesthesia will be used during the operation; the surgery will take place on an outpatient basis. When the patient presents cases that are not complicated, the surgeon will make an incision directly in the scrotum. Once the canal between the abdominal cavity and the scrotum has been repaired, the contained fluid is removed from the scrotum, and the incision will be closed by the professionals. In cases where the patient presents complicated conditions (for example in situations where the patient has a hernia), the incision will be made in the groin area. Other professionals prefer using a laparoscopic approach to restore the hydrocele. A laparoscopic surgery is performed by making small incisions in the damaged area, after this has been done, the surgeon will introduce a tiny instrument that contains a camera that will allow the doctor to watch and to solve the problem. The images will be shown in a monitor that will be located in the operating room.
- Surgery length: The surgery is estimated to last from two to three hours. Before the operation it is for sure that the doctor will ask the patient to take blood and urine tests, in order to check if he is in an appropriate state of health. The operation is performed under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, a nurse will explain how the operation will be performed and if a temporary drain will be used. The aim of the drain is to avoid the chances of having a post-surgery infection caused by the accumulation of fluid. In the majority of the cases, patients are able to go to their homes the same day of the operation.
- How is the post surgery process
After the surgery the patient will be taken to a recovery area in order to check if his conditions are in a normal state. The nurse will control blood pressure and the temperature of the body. The doctor will arrange a meeting with the patient a few days after the operation to check if the healing process is going well and to be sure that there is not a risk of an infection. Swelling is normal to be found around the scar, however if the patient finds that the area of the scar is red for a prolonged time it is important to ask the doctor in order to avoid a future disorder. Physical activities are avoided at least for one month after the operation; this is recommended by doctors, because it is not appropriate to force the body by making any sport or running. If the patient feels uncomfortable pain, it is important to notice the doctor because he may suggest having a special medication for pain.
This type of surgery has been considered to be one of the safest procedures compared to other operations. The percentage of risk is low: only 2%. There exists the possibility that this operation could affect the spermatic vessels and concern the man´s fertility. There are other risks that are common in other surgical procedure, such as an adverse reaction to the anesthesia; for this, before the surgery, professionals will determinate if the anesthesia that has been chosen is suitable for the patient, this is performed by making specific tests that will determinate which anesthesia is appropriate. Another complication can be bleeding from the surgical incision or an internal bleeding. Both can be treated by taking preventive measures, and in the majority of the cases it is rare to happen, because professionals follow a lot of rules to avoid this disorder. Infection is another risk, that is, in the majority of the cases prevented by doctors. If the patient feels there is a strange reaction in his body, he has to contact immediately his doctor or a hospital.
The surgery will solve problems related to the pain that patients who have a hydrocele suffer. It will improve the wellness of the patient, by solving this uncomfortable disorder that could affect several aspects of his life.
- What does the surgery not do
The surgery will not introduce any implant to the body of the patient. It will not increase the size of the testes. The operation will extract the fluids that are contained in this part of the body of the patient.
