Hip Resurfacing Surgery

Hip Resurfacing Surgery

Relevant information about Hip Resurfacing Surgery.

The hip resurfacing procedure is one of the techniques that surgeons have been performing over the last years, with great success. In this procedure, the femoral head is given a new shape in order to be linked with a metal cup. The metal device is placed into the pelvis, to complete the work.

Actually, not only the femoral head can be involved during the procedure, but also the joint of the hip which is usually known as socket joint of the body. At the same time, this hip socket is named acetabulum and has the shape of a wide cup placed around the head of the femur.

  • Technique description

There are several incisions involved during the Hip Resurfacing Surgery. The possible incisions to begin the hip resurfacing can be placed at the front of the hip or at the back of the hip. The decision of choosing one incision over other is up to the surgeon. However, in many cases, doctors tend to choose the back incision, as it allows the joint capsule to remain intact. Maintaining the joint capsule perfect can reduce the possibility of a dislocation after the procedure.

  • Advantages and risks of the procedure

There are several advantages involved within the hip resurfacing procedure. One of the most important ones is that the head of the femur is preserved. At the same time, the procedure assures no risk of micro fracture of the femoral bone, while it is reduced the risk of dislocation in a very significant way. And on the contrary of other patients, the ones that go through a hip resurfacing tend to recover much more rapidly.

Another thing to bear in mind is that by using metal it is reduced significantly the possibility of osteolysis; and at the same time, metal has a longer lifetime expectation than an implant.

However, it is wise to consider that there could be certain risks when going through a hip resurfacing. Some of them are related to some risks of getting the femoral neck broke. Of course, there are chances of reducing those possible risks. Some of the ways to achieve that are getting the proper angle of implantation of the device, and at the same time, trying not to get the neck notching when getting the femoral head ready for the procedure.

Another risk, which is increasingly consulted by patients, is the possible dislocation. It is important to have in mind that an artificial hip can suffer a dislocation, just as any other real hip can suffer it as well. It is true that this risk is higher after the surgery, when tissues are still healing in the proximities of the joint. But patients should not worry, they should just follow the instructions of their physical therapist, which would be in charge of explaining what movements can or cannot be made after surgery.

  • Requirements for patients

There are several requirements for patients to be considered before getting the hip resurfacing procedure. One of them is to have a solid bone in the head of the femur, in order to hold the component of the resurfacing itself. And it is also crucial to count with healthy kidneys, in order to be able to be in touch and accept blood borne metal ions that may appear as a consequence of debris items.

Another key aspect is the determination of the patient, along with its doctor, to go under the treatment. According to specialists, a surgery with such characteristics should be considered when the patient is suffering from deep pain, and when the activities he or she usually does are affected by its current medical condition.

And as it happens with other medical treatments, patients will be indicated to go under a certain type of exams, in order to assure that the patient gathers the needed characteristics to go under the procedure.

Finally, once the surgery is done, the patient will need to experience a long rehabilitation, which would be conducted by a specialized physical therapist.

There is a technique named hip resurfacing arthroplasty, which is a kind of hip replacement that is generally used to replace the arthritic surface of the joint of the hip involved. However, this procedure removes very little bone in comparison with what is known as total hip replacement. As hip resurfacing takes a lot less bone than the total hip replacement, it is widely recommended for younger patients. On the other hand, the total hip replacement, which is a much more invasive technique, is usually used on patients who are older. In fact, people who are less than 60 years and suffer some kind of arthritis in the hip may need a hip replacement in the future in spite of having already a hip resurfacing. In the case of patients who have an advanced arthritis or osteoporosis, it is suggested to go under a total hip replacement rather than a hip resurfacing.

At the same time, there are many reasons for which a replacing procedure may be chosen. One of the cases is the presence of an arthritic joint, for which an artificial implant is used to avoid bones from getting rubbed with each other, and consequently avoid the pain caused by rubbing bones of the hip. Certainly, the main goal is to allow patients to go back to their regular routine and activities, as well as feeling much freer during everyday life.
