Gallbladder Removal Surgery
Relevant information about Gallbladder Removal Surgery.
- What does the surgery consist on
Gallbladder removal is commonly named cholecystectomy. The patient may go under this type of surgery when the doctor founds stones in the organ or in the duct leading from the gallbladder. It is important to extract this stones because they could case an infection, bleeding or pain.
- Which problem does the surgery solve
The surgery will help patients who present symptoms of pain and nausea which are caused by the apparition of gallstones. Gallstones can be the result of high cholesterol, obesity, being a victim of determined diseases such as diabetes, anemia or a disease in the pancreas. Other causes are an inadequate alimentation or the ingestion of toxic products such as alcohol or tobacco.
- How is the surgery performed
There are two ways of performing a cholecystectomy. The first one is called Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal Surgery. The surgeon will make 3 or 4 small incisions and then, by using a camera and special tools and equipment he/she will remove the gallbladder. This type of surgery presents many advantages for patients: he/she will have a faster recovery; it is probable that the patient will present less pain, and finally, the time of staying in the hospital is only of 24 hours after the surgery. The second way is called Open Gallbladder Removal Surgery; the surgeon will make a large incision, located below the ribs and on the right side of the abdomen. The professional will perform the operation by working through the incision; after the gall bladder is removed, doctors will close the incision by using stitches, staples or steri strips (which are special tapes). The patient will be able to leave the hospital 3 days after the surgery.
- Surgery length: The surgery can last from one to two hours. The surgeon will give you some medicine in order to numb the body; it is probable that the medicine will be given by intravenous or using a face mask. It is important to take some indications before the surgical procedure. Before the surgery, the patient will have to tell the doctor if he/she is taking any specific medicine or vitamin; the patient will not be able to take any aspirin or ibuprofen during a week before the operation; it is indicated not to eat or drink anything at least twelve hours before the process; finally, the patient is obligated to tell the doctor if he/she is allergic to any medicine, food or other thing that may cause any problem during the procedure.
- How is the post surgery process
After the surgery, the professionals will take the patient to a private room where he/she will be able to rest. Doctors will check if the blood pressure and pulse are normal. If you want to leave the hospital the day of the operation, doctors will ask you to be accompanied by a family member who will be in charge of taking care of you. If you have gone under the type of surgery that consists on making a large incision, you may have a drain near the incision; it will be checked and emptied by the staff of the hospital. Physical activities should be avoided for at least three weeks, or a month; this rule is important to be followed because if the person who has gone under this type of surgery does any sport that implies physical strength, he/she could have a problem with the complete healing of his/her wounds. If the patient feels several pains after the surgery, it is important to inform the doctor or the surgeon team; they will be in charge of checking if the healing process is normal and they will recommend taking specific medicine. Once the patient is in his/her home; he/she will have to rest in order to have an adequate recovery. The patient will be able to take a shower after two days from the operation; the patient must not take a tub bath for at least one week after the surgery. If the patient has a bandage covering the incision, the nurse will remove it two days after the operation, after this, she/he will teach the patient how to change the bandages in order to maintain an appropriate hygiene.
It is normal for patients who undergo a laparoscopic to feel pain in their neck or shoulders. To avoid pain it is recommended to use heat and to rest. Doctors may teach the patient how to do determinate breathing and coughing exercises, these exercises will help to prevent a lung infection (which is common after this surgery). It is recommended to use a pillow over your incision when you make a deep breath and cough. It is rare for patients that go under a cholecystectomy to have a normal bowel movement. To solve this problem doctors recommend walking and incorporating vegetables, cereals, beans and grain bread into the normal diet. It is not recommended to drive until the doctor allows the patient to, he/she should be sure about the medication taken and be aware if this medication could affect driving skills.
Patients who go under this kind of surgery will feel much more comfortable with his/her own body. Having problems with the gall bladder can be painful, uncomfortable and unhealthy. The surgery can remove the complete organ or (depending in each case), the professional will remove the stones that are located in the organ. It is for sure that the person who has his/her gall bladder removed will feel much better.
- What does the surgery not do
The surgery will not incorporate any strange body into the patient. It will not be a replacement of the organ; the gall bladder will be completely removed from the patient in order to avoid any discomfort that the situation presents.
