Dentures Treatment
Relevant information about Dentures Treatment.
- What does the treatment consist on
It consists on putting a denture or what is called a prosthetic device in the mouth of the patient in order to replace missing tooth. Teeth are supported by smooth and hard tissues of what is called the oral cavity. There are several types and designs of dentures, including: removable partial dentures and complete dentures. The first kind of prosthetic device is used in cases where the patient has lost specific tooth in a particular part of the arch; crown and bridge dentures are a little bit more expensive than removable partial dentures but they are more stable. Complete dentures are used by those patients who have lost several teeth in a single arch, for instance in the maxilar or in the mandibular arch.
- Which problem does the treatment solve
The main problem that this type of treatment solves is the replacement of missing tooth in the patient´s mouth. There are other problems that can be solved and many aspects that are truly improved. Mastication is better developed by replacing edentulous areas for denture teeth. For those patients who presented problems when they spoke, denture can be an important solution, replacing teeth allows the patient to have a better communication. The presence of teeth improves the appearance and helps to achieve a better self image by increasing self –esteem.
- How is the treatment performed
The treatment starts with the first visit to the dentistry. After an oral exam, the impressions are made by the professionals, and the right material of the denture will be defined according to the economical possibilities and needs of the patients. There are many materials that can be chosen, for example, porcelain, titanium and acrylic. The impressions are then used to make a cast that will be inserted in the patient´s mouth in order to register the measurements of the patient´s bite. Once this is done, the color and shape of the teeth are chosen by the experts; these models will be introduced into a wax denture, at the next visit, the patient will try this denture in order to decide if it suits correctly. Once the patient accepts the wax denture, it will return to the lab for being modified and for making the final denture. Finally, the ultimate denture is placed in the patient´s mouth, assuring to him/her, a complete new change of image.
- Surgery length: The treatment requires time because it implies many factors, the visit to the dentistry, the taking of the impressions and finally, the realization of the several models in order to achieve the final denture. There are many visits to the dentistry, until both patient and doctor arrive to the right election of the denture. First of all, they will have to take many tests and impressions of the teeth, because of the importance of achieving the most similar shape and color of every tooth. The next step is to take all the impressions to the lab, which will be in charge of arriving to the final model. The treatment is thought to take, approximately one month. It depends always in choosing the correct dentistry who will facilitate the process, and also the right election of the lab (that is a decision made by the doctor), that will be the responsible of making the final denture.
- How is the post treatment process
The post treatment process does not imply too many complications. The patient will be able to resume his/her activities normally, the day after the visit to the dentistry. Physical activities are not contraindicated; however, there are some rules, especially related to the cleanness of the denture that must be followed strictly. A good cleaning has to be done at least, twice a day. Dentures are made of a porous material that can absorb bits of bacteria or food. Special toothpaste will be recommended by the dentistry; the brush has to be done carefully because dentures are fragile. There are some special cleaners that are not suggested to be used, among them we can find: alcohol, whiteners and bleaches. It is not necessary to wash the dentures after every meal; however it would be good to rinse them to avoid any accumulation of food. The apparition of an infection can be eliminated by washing the denture with a solution of water and Clorox, only once a week.
Complications can be solved in the first days of having the new denture. One of the problems could be the excessive production of saliva; this is possible to occur during the first 12 to 24 hours when the glands come back to their normal state. Some patients have manifested the apparition of gagging; this can be the consequence of a denture that is too loose, too wide or far posterior onto the soft palate. Sometimes it can appear gingivitis under the denture, which is the cause of the accumulation of dental plaque. The main problem that has been presented by patients is the stability, support and retention that have to be presented by the denture. In some cases this three rules do not operate correctly. This can be solved by having a meeting with the dentistry in order to explain the specific problem, and achieving an appropriate solution.
- What does the treatment do
The treatment will assure the patient having a new smile and good looking appearance. There are three aspects that the denture will have to follow in order to complete the needs of the patient. The first one consists on assuring the patient a correct support, keeping the denture from moving vertically. The support depends practically on the denture flanges which are in charge of making a correct holding. Stability is the rule that will assure the patient that the denture will not move horizontally. It relies on the denture base that has to be smooth. Finally, the last rule is the retention, which does not have to permit the vertical moving, opposite to the direction of the insertion.
- What does the treatment not do
The treatment will not solve the problem of unique teeth. They are used for replacing several teeth that have been lost. Depending on the cases, the doctor will determine if it is necessary to put a denture or having a dental bone surgery. They are two different processes, mainly because one implies going under a surgery while the other is a treatment that replaces teeth with an artificial material.
