Colposcopy Surgery

Colposcopy Surgery

Relevant information about Colposcopy Surgery.

  • What does the surgery consist on

The colposcopy consists on a medical diagnostic procedure that allows the professional to examine the cervix and tissues of the vagina and vulva. The procedure is performed using a colposcope that will help the professional to find if there is a disorder among the tissues. One of the main aims of a colposcopy is to prevent cervical cancer by detecting possible signs of cancer. The procedure has been used since 1925, when it was developed.

  • Which problem does the surgery solve

The procedure will prevent and determinate if the patient has a specific disorder in the vagina and vulva. It is very useful, because this type of procedures, allow the professional to examine the organ and to notice if it has an unusual appearance or if it is presenting an unhealthy disorder. This technique is used for diagnosing which is the problem or injury that is suffering the patient.

  • How is the surgery performed

In the first evaluation the professional will investigate some important issues of the clinical history of the patient. Among these issues we can find, parity, last menstrual period, allergies, significant diseases that the patient has suffered, prescript medication that the patient is taking, etc. During the procedure, the professional will use a special instrument called colposcope. This instrument is used to find signs of abnormal tissue formation. There are three types of colposcope: low power, medium and high. Each type is used for different diagnosis and cases. A colposcope is a complex instrument that has many elements such as light filters; which are used for highlighting different aspects of the surface of the cervix. The colposcopy will be performed with the woman lying on her back; the doctor will use a speculum that will be placed in the vagina and will help finding any suspicious lesion. After the professional has made a complete examination of the area, the colposcopist defines the areas where it exists a higher probability of affection and takes biopsies from these areas using a special biopsy tool. The majority of the professionals consider that there is no need of using anesthesia during the procedure. However, many doctors consider the possibility of using local anesthesia during the medical evaluation.

  • Surgery lenght: The procedure is short and is estimated to last from half an hour to a complete hour. Before the procedure some clinics prefer making a routine test that includes taking blood pressure and checking the body´s temperature. The patient will be able to leave the clinic the same day of the procedure. The majority of the doctors do not use anesthesia during the medical evaluation, however if they choose to use a specific sedation, the patient will have to stay in the clinic until the effect of the anesthesia has gone.

  • How is the post surgery process

As it is not a complicated procedure, the recovery process will not be severe. Most patients have not felt pain or discomfort around the affected area. However, if the patient feels an uncomfortable sensation she should notify about his situation to the doctor. The patient will be able to resume her normal activities the following day of the medical examination. Among the normal activities we can include: going back to work, driving, having sexual intercourse, etc. It is not recommended to do physical activity at least for a week after the procedure has taken place. It is probable that the patient may feel tired the same day the colposcopy was done, this is normal, but if the patient feels tired past this period, she should notify the doctor. If the doctors notice a strange formation during the colposcopy, it is highly probable that he will recommend to the patient to stop smoking (if the woman is smoker). Smoking is not good and helps the formation of bad tissues such as cancer. There is no need of following a diet after the evaluation.

  • Possible complications

There are not severe complications as a consequence of this procedure. However bleeding is a possible risk during a colposcopy. Bleeding is not serious in most of the cases, and can be stopped with special medication and a well trained professional that knows how to manage the situation. There exists the possibility of having an infection; there are few cases where this occurs because the professionals take the right measures to prevent this situation. If an infection appears, the doctor will give special antibiotics to the patient as well as he will indicate to follow general hygiene rules. An adverse reaction to the anesthesia is possible if the doctor uses a sedative medication. To prevent this, the doctor will make a deep investigation that includes the medical history of the patient as well as specific tests. The last and possible complication is the failure to determinate if the patient has a lesion in the vagina or vulva. The patient should consult another professional if this happens, to find out what the problem or disorder that she is suffering is.

  • What does the surgery do

The treatment is indicated for patients that have a problem or a disorder in the area of the vagina and vulva. It is also performed as a regular evaluation that determines if these organs are developing and having a good function. The patient will fell much more comfortable and sure after the colposcopy, because she will know if she has a specific disease, or if she has suffered an injury. Colposcopy is very useful for doctors because it gives them the chance to find the problem and viewing inside how are the organs of the patient.
