Relevant information about Ayurveda Treatment.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system and it means “science of life” (Ayur: life and Veda: science). This medical system helps a person achieve a state of “perfect health” through natural therapies and lifestyles interventions and it stresses that doing certain practices the people can have a long and healthy life in total balance and harmony: the mind and the body not only have an influence in each other, but also are each other. This means that mental symptoms are just as important and significant as physical symptoms. Ayurveda’s philosophy explains that these can be gone by restoring the balance between our body and mind. Balancing the mental, spiritual and physical conditions is said to help the prevention of illnesses.

Ayurveda’s concepts are related to interconnectedness, life forces or “doshas” and the constitution of the body or “prakriti”. The interconnectedness is mainly linked to the idea that everything in the universe are connected and joined, and, therefore, every individual has an element of the universe. It is believed that illnesses appear at the time that a person is not in total harmony with the universe, which can have both physical and mental/emotional consequences. The second ayurverdic concept, life forces or “doshas”, are primary characteristics of the constitution or “prakriti”. Three life forces exist, which have the control over the individual’s body; these are the “pitta dosha”, “kapha dosha” and “vata dosha”. The beliefs related to these 3 “doshas” involve the ideas that each life force has a special relationship to the function of the body; each one is made of at least 2 of the 5 elements (ether, air, water, earth or fire); each human being owns a particular combination of the “doshas”; each “dosha” is characterized by different physical and mental elements; and, finally, if a “dosha” is not in balance it will cause particular symptoms.

  • The elements fire and water are represented by the “pitta dosha”, which has the control over the digestive system. This is why “pitta” is altered if a person eats spicy or sour food or suffers from fatigue, and if the “pitta” is not balanced, the body may be susceptible to heart and digestive diseases or hypertension.
  • Water and earth elements are combined in the “kapha dosha”, which is involved in the maintenance of immunity and strength of the body. Diabetes, cancer, respiratory diseases and obesity are the conditions and illnesses which a person can have is they have a predominant “kapha dosha”.
  • The last one, the “vata dosha” represents the elements air and ether, and is thought to be the most powerful one due to the fact that it has the control over the basic body processes. This “dosha” can be altered by grief, dry fruit or fear, among others. If the “vata” is imbalanced, people may suffer from arthritis, insomnia, heart disease and anxiety.

The third concept is constitution or “prakriti”, which is related to the general state of health of a person, referring to an individual’s unique combination of physical and mental characteristics, in addition to the functioning of the body to stay healthy. It is believed that the “prakiti” does not change throughout the person’s life.

The methods of Ayurveda are said to influence in the improvement of stress, insomnia, skin problems, chronic and metabolic problems, fatigue, allergies, heart diseases, colitis, ulcers, arthritis, hypertension, constipation, immune problems and Alzheimer. Furthermore, among its products, one can find cinnamon and cardamom, curcumin, turmeric, spices and oils; black pepper, long pepper and ginger (for the improvement of gastric problems); plants; herbs (which are used in phytotherapy) and varieties of salvia (for the symptoms caused by Alzheimer’s disease). Ayurveda also believes that snake venom has therapeutic properties. Additionally, over 600 herbal formulas and more than 200 plant drugs are used in the ayurvedic treatments. However, the treatment is built to each individual’s constitution, and alterations in the lifestyle, day-to-day activities and diet are among ayurvedic requirements. The treatment consists of the elimination of impurities through a process that is called “panchakarma”. This process involves the removal of the “ama”; this is an undigested food that inserts into the tissues causing interference with the body’s functions and leading to disease. Different methods can be used, such as massages, enemas and the implementation of medical oils. As a part of decreasing the symptoms, numerous options are recommended, including, exercises, meditation, diet alteration, use of small amounts of mineral preparations and herbs. Ayurveda has the goal of nurturing the mind and spirit of a person. Therefore, stressful situations must be avoided and the negative feeling must be released. The ayurvedic doctor, in order to increase the resistance to the disease, might mix proteins, vitamins, herbs and minerals with the purpose of enhancing the digestion process and strengthening immunity.

Ayurvedic medicine has numerous branches, such as surgery, psychiatry, sexual vitality, toxicology, care of the elderly and rejuvenation, gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics and treatment of neck and head illnesses. It is widely practiced in India, where is used by almost 80% of the population. However, India is not the only country that practices ayurvedic medicine: it is also implemented in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal as well. Further, it is used as an alternative medicine outside the territory of India; for instance in the United States, where is practiced by over 200,000 adults.

If the ayurvedic techniques or products are not used in the proper way, they may be damnific; so it is recommended to first consult a practitioner before doing anything. Ayurvedic spas exist, and they are places where all the products and treatments implemented are natural, helping to ensure the total wellness of the body by achieving mental and physical balance.
